We partnered with HAAS Home Technologies to design and deliver a world-class interface design for their client's in-home Crestron home automation system. The design objective was a complete overhaul of the existing visual UI and overall user experience of the entire system. The client, Jonathan Coon, is the CEO of 1-800 Contacts and he contracted us to design a bespoke Crestron UI for his personal residence that would also be installed in his 100-unit housing development project, and would also be sold as a customer-facing, out-of-box sales solution to HAASHT's Crestron customers.
We had the distinct advantage of having primary insights directly from our main users. The recurring theme was that the out-of-the-box visual UI and concurrent user experience, namely the navigation flow and overarching usability, were not in line with the expectations of the client given the robust technology under the hood and the hefty price tag that comes with a Crestron system. The client wanted a better, more delightful, completely customized experience using the system in his home.
We began by conducting an audit of the current system navigation to find ways to minimize the friction of moving through the system, including navigating from page to page and using key feature sets like room grouping, which allows the user to take music or video playing in one room and duplicate that service in another room.
The insights we gathered from poking holes in heuristic and usability weak points and primary qualatative research informed our design decisions and gave us a solid foundation to start building and designing the infastructure that allows users to effortlessly and intuitively use the system in an efficient and interactive way. The end result was a holistic, cohesive experience that not only functions well, but is a total delight to use and interact with.Let's chat about your project
Not only does the design let the incredible smart home technology shine, but it also offers an improved user experience and fixes crucial design usability issues that are commonly associated with Crestron interfaces.
